Fitness Professional in SW Charlotte Teams up with Local Businesses to Provide Scholarships to Summer Fitness Camp for Obese and Underprivileged Kids

June 6, 2010

Hi everyone, I’m Julie Sawyer, and I’m the Fitness Director at The Palisades Country Club here in SW Charlotte. (Also close to Lake Wylie, SC)  I’ve been running kids’ summer tennis camps for over 15 years and am known as a “camp guru” in the Charlotte area.  This year I will be running my first kids’ summer fitness camp and am excited about helping kids stay active and teaching them that exercise can be fun.

I’ve noticed in the past couple of years that the percentage of people willing and/or able to spend money on their fitness has decreased due to the economy.  Although most people are still more willing to invest in their kids, I’ve also heard from many parents that many out there have been hit hard by the recession and aren’t able to put their kids in summer programs.

One reason that this is tragic is because North Carolina has the 5th highest youth obesity rate in the country.  There are many kids in our area who are naturally not active enough, and a summer fitness-oriented camp is a great way to get them moving and teach them about a healthy lifestyle.

Therefore, I decided to take the initiative in breaking down this financial obstacle that is hindering obese and underprivileged kids from participating in fitness camp.  I have started a scholarship program for kids in need, both financially and physically, to help kids take advantage of our Summer Fit Camps.   I have elicited the help of several local businesses such as CrossFit Steele Creek in Ayrsley, Massage Envy at Rivergate, Total Fitness Warehouse, and Omega Sports at Rivergate to fund scholarships for Kids Fit Camp this summer.

One local business owner that firmly supports our cause is Brian Strump, chiropractor and owner of CrossFit Steele Creek in Ayrsley.  Brian expressed his thoughts on the impact of Kids Fit Camp stressing, “It’s very important to start these programs with the children.  They are very impressionable and eager to learn.  Educating them and their parents on proper exercise and nutrition will help to improve their lives and their families’ lives for years.”

I’m also excited about the scholarship program for Kids Fit Camp because I’m looking forward to showing many kids how fun fitness can be.  Through the scholarships provided by these Charlotte businesses, we’ll be able to impact kids that we normally wouldn’t have had the privilege of getting to know.

Summer Kids’ Fit Camps will be offered at The Palisades each week all summer.  For more info on registering  for camp or to see a video on typical camp activities, go to www.tuffgirlbootcamps.com/kidsfitcamp.html.  To inquire about scholarship opportunities for your child, call 803-984-0714.

For more information on contributing to the Kids Fit Camp scholarship fund, email julie@tuffgirlbootcamps.com, and we’ll send you the details on how to contribute and how your business can benefit from contributing to Kids Fit Camp.  All contributions are tax-free deductions.

Local Businesses Provide Scholarships to Summer Camp in Southwest Charlotte for Obese and Underprivileged Kids

Charlotte, NC – June 3rd, 2010—Summertime is a great time for our kids to increase their activity levels by taking advantage of a summer camp that keeps them moving while having fun.   Since North Carolina has the 5th highest youth obesity rate in the country, there are many local children who need to be able to take advantage of a fitness-based summer camp to encourage healthy daily activity levels.  However due to financial hardships, many families will not be able to afford this opportunity this summer.

Julie Sawyer, Fitness Director at The Palisades Country Club and owner of TuffGirl Bootcamps, has begun a scholarship program for kids in need, both financially and physically, to help kids take advantage of her Kids’ Summer Fit Camps.   She has elicited the help of several local businesses such as CrossFit Steele Creek in Ayrsley, Massage Envy at Rivergate, and Omega Sports at Rivergate to fund scholarships for Kids Fit Camp this summer.  Brian Strump, chiropractor and owner of CrossFit Steele Creek stresses, “It’s very important to start these programs with the children.  They are very impressionable and eager to learn.  Educating them and their parents on proper exercise and nutrition will help to improve their lives and their families’ lives for years.”

“I’m excited about our scholarship program,” says Sawyer, “because I’m looking forward to showing many kids how fun fitness can be.  Through these scholarships provided by Charlotte businesses, we’ll be able to impact kids that we normally wouldn’t have had the privilege of getting to know.”
